12V vs 24V: Which Voltage to Choose for Staircase Lighting?
When designing a "Smart Staircase," a common question arises: should you invest in 24V equipment? While 24V is popular for general interior lighting, staircase projects have different requirements.
What is the Technical Difference?
The difference between 12V and 24V strips of the same type lies solely in the wiring of the LEDs within a single cuttable segment:
- 12V: 3 LEDs are connected in series per segment.
- 24V: 6 LEDs are connected in series per segment.
If you choose strips from the same manufacturer and series, there will be no difference in brightness or color temperature—the LEDs themselves are identical.
The Voltage Drop Myth on Stairs
The main argument for 24V is preventing brightness loss over long distances (5+ meters). However, a standard stair step is rarely longer than 1.5–2 meters. On such short runs, even a budget 12V strip works perfectly, and no visible "dimming" occurs at the end of the step.
Why 12V is Better for Your Staircase
- Tolerance for "Errors": 12V systems are less sensitive to contact quality on short distances and are more forgiving regarding wire gauge choices.
- Sensor Stability: Lower voltage helps reduce induction noise (interference) in the signal wires connected to the sensors. This minimizes the risk of the lights turning on ghost-like without actual movement.
- Component Availability: High-quality 12V power supplies and accessories are often easier to find and offer a wider variety of options.
